Install an Instant Messenger Application

To use IM-Translate with Google Talk, you'll need both Google Desktop and Google Talk.

Note: Both you and your friend must have the same version of Google Talk in order to use IM-Translate. Most English installations are 1.0.0.104, while Spanish and French installations are more typically 1.0.0.105. Right-click on the little Google Talk balloon in the system tray and choose "About" to determine your version.

Note that IM-Translate is compatible with both Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 and 9.0 (beta).
